Lucky Thirteen

  • Fidelio Orchestra 91-95 Clerkenwell Road London, EC1R 5BX United Kingdom (map)

Think 13 is an unlucky number? Let us prove you wrong…

In this woodwind extravaganza, members of the Fidelio Orchestra, plus guests, will be playing two pieces composed for 13 instruments. The first, Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 (known as the Gran Partita) features a combination of instruments that Mozart had never before used in his compositions for wind ensemble. At its first performance, an ecstatic audience member declared it ‘glorious … excellent and sublime’ - a judgement with which we’re sure you’ll agree. It’s also featured in the 1984 film Amadeus, in which the character Antonio Salieri, upon hearing it, exclaims that he thought he “was hearing the voice of God”. We’ll leave it to you to decide whether our performance is as divine...

It’s pretty tricky to follow up a piece like that, but Gary Carpenter’s Pantomime for 13 Winds does an admirable job. In the composer’s own words, the piece “attempts to invoke the shadowy and half-forgotten world of smoky music halls, vaudeville, burlesque and their later - often televisual - incarnations.”

To accompany this ‘sublime’ and ‘shadowy’ performance, and to calm any triskaidekaphobiacs among you, there’ll be wine and food available throughout the performance. See you there!
